The K.I.T.E. Scholars Program is a 1.3 million dollar Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) grant awarded to develop and expand the behavioral health workforce by increasing the number of graduates in HU’s Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC) program who are prepared and committed to provide integrated behavioral health services to individuals, groups, couples and families across the lifespan in rural, vulnerable and medically under-served areas for those at risk for developing or who have a recognized behavioral health disorder.
Program ObjectivesStipends
Heidelberg University’s MAC program will provide stipends to 78 graduate-level clinical mental health and/or school counseling students who are enrolled in their final field placement that provide integrated behavioral health services for rural, vulnerable, and/or medically underserved communities.
Field Placements
Heidelberg University’s MAC program will add to existing, and/or expand a minimum of 16 total internship placement opportunities (four per year) by September 2021. These internship placements will offer interdisciplinary behavioral health services in rural, vulnerable and medically-underrepresented regions that serve families with racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity.
Student Training
MAC program will strengthen the counseling curricula of Project K.I.T.E students supporting their participation in integrated behavioral health service teams serving in rural, vulnerable, and/or medically-underserved regions with clients from diverse backgrounds using evidence-based practices.
Leadership Training
Heidelberg University’s MAC program will implement interdisciplinary training at HU in collaboration with selected behavioral health partners. This training collaborative will provide interprofessional training and peer support for faculty and field placement supervisors’ training.
Student Benefits
Stipend: A $10,000 stipend in the final year of internship aids students in off-setting costs associated with the internship.

Internships: Hands on experience as students take advantage of the growing segment of Integrated Behavioral Care.
Training: Field experience is supplemented with Integrated Behavioral Care models taught in the classroom as well as the ability to attend specialized conferences and workshops.
Community Benefits
Workforce: Students commit to seeking employment in the Integrated Behavioral Care workforce upon completion of the MAC program.
Increased Care: The grant addresses the deficiency in behavioral health care to those in under-served rural areas that lack the care they need.
Community: The grant gives back to the community in aiding those in need targeting Seneca, Erie, Huron and Sandusky counties as well as the cities of Cleveland, Toledo and Columbus.
